fetchmail, as the name indicates, fetches mails from other accounts, forwarding them to the local smtpd.
Username-password-pairs for authentication are best kept inside a .netrc file, which is supported by fetchmail.

The file $HOME/.forward is used by the MDA of a system to allow
user-defined treatment of incoming email like e.g. forwarding to another
address or handling them over to procmail.

All contained paths have to be given in absolute form.

The maildir standard mailbox format is described in maildir(5).

	* Each maildir contains a set of subdirectories: cur, new and tmp.
	* Enhanced maildirs support subfoldering through contained maildirs whose name starts with a dot (e.g. maildir/.sub/{cur,new,tmp}

Paul Frields' slides about his
notebook's email setup show quite some similarities with my own one. The major
differences are:

	* I moved from offlineimap to mbsync, mostly for performance reasons.
	* Instead of having a full-fledged MTA running on my notebook, I prefer a small send-only MTA for the sake of small footprint and ease of configuration.

Procmail is a powerful tool to handle incoming email based on regular
expressions applied to various parts of the mail. It's most use is to sort mail
into subfolders, so this is where we'll start:
